How do I request debt validation after a collection letter?

I got a debt collection letter for an old account I barely recognize. I want to respond calmly and ask for validation without admitting the debt. Questions for the community: - What should a debt validation letter include? - How many days do I usually have after the first written notice? - Has anyone used CFPB sample language successfully? Sharing what worked (or what confused you) helps others facing the same notice. Educational discussion only—not legal advice.

I sent a short certified letter asking for the original creditor, amount, and account number. I kept a copy and the tracking receipt. I did not discuss payment details in that first reply.

The CFPB has plain-English sample letters. I used those as a starting point and replaced the blanks carefully. Timing mattered for me—I replied within the window printed on the notice.
